Muskaan, a project of Foundation for Child Protection, a Pune-based NGO, is working on the issue of Sexual Abuse of Children for the past 15 years. We stand apart as the only initiative in Pune whose entire focus is on the critical issue of sexual abuse of children. We have a three-pronged approach to the issue involving prevention, counseling, and police, and legal support. We work not only with children, but also with other stakeholders, such as parents, teachers, police, and other state agencies.
Initially, when Muskaan began its work, the issue of sexual abuse of children was not addressed and people were not willing to acknowledge its existence. It was almost unreported. There was no specific law for the protection of children from sexual abuse. Finally, in 2012 the POCSO Act came into existence and people became aware of the extent of this heinous crime. There was a sharp increase in the demand for awareness sessions and reporting of cases of child sexual abuse.
