Description
Cataract remains the leading cause of avoidable blindness in India, disproportionately affecting economically weaker sections and elderly populations who lack access to timely and affordable eye care. In Nagpur and the surrounding regions, the availability of well-equipped, comprehensive eye care facilities catering to poor and marginalized communities is limited, resulting in delayed treatment and permanent visual disability.
Madhav Netralaya Eye Institute and Research Centre, a charitable tertiary eye care hospital, proposes to implement a Free Cataract Surgery Programme aimed at restoring vision among underprivileged patients suffering from cataract-related visual impairment. The programme will provide end-to-end care, including patient screening, pre-operative investigations, cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation, medicines, and post-operative follow-up—entirely free of cost.
The initiative will be implemented by an experienced team of qualified ophthalmologists and trained medical staff using modern surgical techniques and standard clinical protocols to ensure safety and quality outcomes. Priority will be given to patients from below-poverty-line families, senior citizens, and individuals unable to afford surgical treatment.
Through this programme, Madhav Netralaya seeks to reduce the burden of avoidable blindness, improve quality of life, enhance economic productivity, and promote social inclusion among vulnerable populations. The project directly contributes to national public health objectives by supporting blindness prevention and strengthening accessible eye care services in Central India.
Expected Outcomes
Restoration of Vision
Free cataract surgeries will restore functional vision to economically weaker and elderly patients suffering from cataract-related blindness or severe visual impairment, enabling them to see clearly again.
Prevention of Avoidable Blindness
Cataract is the leading cause of preventable blindness in India. Timely surgical intervention will significantly reduce avoidable and reversible blindness in the target population.
Improved Quality of Life
Post-surgery, beneficiaries will experience enhanced independence in daily activities such as mobility, self-care, and social interaction, thereby improving overall quality of life and dignity.
Economic and Social Rehabilitation
Restored eyesight enables working-age beneficiaries to resume livelihood activities and elderly patients to reduce dependency on family members, contributing positively to household and community well-being.
Reduction in Healthcare Burden
Early cataract intervention prevents complications that may otherwise require advanced, costly, and long-term treatment, thereby reducing the burden on families and public healthcare systems.
Increased Access to Specialized Eye Care
The programme ensures access to high-quality ophthalmic surgical care—including pre-operative evaluation, surgery, medicines, and post-operative follow-up—at no cost to underserved communities.
Community Awareness and Trust Building
Successful outcomes will increase awareness about eye health, encourage early diagnosis, and build trust among marginalized communities towards institutional healthcare services.
Contribution to National Blindness Control Goals
The initiative directly supports the objectives of the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI) by reducing cataract-induced visual disability in the region.
